In the first two parts of this series we’ve been looking into web content, and that won’t change today as we examine some different strategies you can apply for your content publishing. The content you deploy on your website will be critical to your success or ultimate failure as a web publisher. You’ll need to overcome some challenges and set precise goals with your content in order to ensure it serves your overall purpose.

Creating content is your task if you decide to become a web publisher. You’ll need to constantly produce up to the minute accurate content that will be attractive to today’s modern web surfer. The task is both complex and simple, paradoxically. It doesn’t take genius to create compelling content, but if you underestimate the job and don’t produce high quality content, you’re probably dead in the water. Web surfers have become accustomed to abundant and free high quality content.

No matter how you look at it: in the last few years, the commoditization of web content has gone on in full force. Sure, you’ll still hear people say “Content is King”, and their miserable hearts are in the right place. But in the world we live in: Oil is King, and Content isn’t even an ugly maiden. Content is an unavoidable need for websites. Without it, you’ll really be screwed. But can your content actually make you the type of money you dream about?

Man, the amount of web spam I’m seeing lately is actually rivaling the levels of email spam we’ve all become so immune to. If this keeps up, and I can’t figure out a better automated way to deal with some of it, I’m looking at a new full-time and completely unprofitable job. If anything points out the weaknesses in Google’s algo, it’s this.

If you’re tired of getting spammed from a single referrer, rejoice. There’s no need to take it, and implementing a ban for a referrer is as easy as pie. That is, if you’re using mod_rewrite.

If you are using mod_rewrite, then you simply add a rule to your .htaccess files as follows:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} offender\.com [NC]
RewriteRule .* – [F]

Merely replace the “offender” with the actual domain name of the offending website. Any referrer from that website will now get a 403 Forbiden message.

Problem solved.

The recent Google update that I’ve mentioned a few times in the last couple weeks is now starting to “firm up”, based on what I observe in my logfiles. As I’ve explained before, I’m not an SEO Scientist, but rather an SEO Chef. I don’t study SEO on a detailed basis, but rather make my moves based on observation. I’d liken the way I approach SEO to the way I approach driving a car: I don’t know how a gas engine really works, but it’s never stopped me from being a skilled driver.

Lately I’ve been attempting to delegate more of my internet marketing and SEO responsibilities, and one obvious area is with “SEO Services”. Now, the idea is great in theory, but like anything else, is going to require plenty of due diligence when it comes to finding providers who can actually do the job.

It’s easy to focus most of your time on search engine results when you’re attempting to build traffic. The search engines remain the best overall source of traffic, that websites really cannot live without. In the end, the traffic you get from search engines will be extremely important to you. But one thing I’ve noticed as the years have rolled on is that the more you focus on results, the tougher it might be to get them.

If you are constantly working on your website, looking to expand your rankings, you’ll need new sources of keyword ideas. One of the best of this is pretty obvious, but invaluable. If you look at what people are already entering to get to to your website, you’ll find plenty of ancillary terms that will be easy to rank for.

For the most part Yahoo Search sort of sucks. But I will say I enjoy the “Search Assist” feature they provide. Yahoo allows you to drill down on search terms and they offer suggestions to help you make your search more precise. This is exactly where you can do a bit of SEO.
