Google Backlink Update

It looks like Google has updated backlinks again in the last few days. They seem to running on a pretty tight schedule as far as backlink updates go. At least in the search engine. Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) also shows a backlink update, but this one was a lot longer in the making. So far there’s been no sign of an export of visible Toolbar PR, but it’s not like those are ever good these days.

I strapped on my Google PageRank bar the other day and surfed the web. The devastation to the green pixel fairy dust was palpable. It’s amazing the incredible demotions websites have taken in PR. It’s not uncommon to see demotions from PR6 to PR2, or wild swings from PR5 to 0. And that makes you wonder which value is right? Was Google right when they used to think a site was a valuable 6? Or are they right now that they show the same site as a useless and worthless PR 2?

Maybe they really just don’t have a clue as to the value of a website because they’re using a machine to assign value. The machine used to pretty much count links and assess values. Now their algo goes to great lengths to ignore as many links as possible, or at least appear like they do.

In the end, we don’t have much choice as webmasters but to take whatever value they assign at face value. But there’s no point in pretending you need high PR to make money. You don’t. Websites with solid business models will make excellent cash as long as there’s core business logic built in.

In any event, I digress. Backlink updates and Toolbar updates would seemingly be closely inter-related, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Even the GWT update might not be closely related to when the Toolbar updates. How close the backlink values Google is showing us and the rankings are, is also anyone’s guess.
