The Website Creed: Adapt And Innovate

The longer you sit around the internet, watching what goes on, the more you realize just how flexible you have to be to remain in the job. If you get bent out of shape by changes, you’ll end up burning out quickly. There’s no need to get emotional when you’ve built a business in Cyberspace. You’re alone on the frontier, with no map to guide you. That’s okay, with quick wits, well-honed instincts, and a clear business model, you can succeed. But along the way, you might just discover what I already have: I have to adapt and innovate, or I’m nothing but roadkill on the Information Superhighway.
Years ago I met a German internet marketer. He described his vision of the job of making money online. To him, it was as simple as a technical trick. Once achieved, you would sit back and collect the cash. He planned on working hard for a month or so, and then sitting back for the rest of his life, collecting royalties on his cleverness. Now I’m not saying this can’t happen, but I’m guessing the percentage of cases where someone has this kind of instant success are very unlikely.
When you look at successful internet companies like Yahoo, Ebay, Amazon, and Google, you can’t help but marvel at just how much these companies have morphed over the years. In a sense, we can use their examples to guide us with our websites.
It looks 2008 will be another year with plenty of upheaval and change to the old ways of doing business online. I figure I’ll just go with the flow so I don’t get washed away like so many others.
