Social Bookmark Links Are Overrated

I understand why people do social networking, and it’s easy to see how making the “front page” of a well trafficked social network would help a website. But the philosophy of “tagging” or submitting all of your own work to social websites is one I don’t agree with. First of all, it takes real time to do so. Secondly, the pages that link to you are of very low quality. Add to that the presence of the mis-used “nofollow” tag, and you get some very weak links.

If the time spent submitting your pages is no big deal, then these weak links can’t really hurt you. But if you’re wasting hard earned time on submissions, then maybe you need to rethink your strategy. If the article you submit has no chance of becoming popular and driving traffic to your website, you might just be better served taking the same time and adding even better content to your site.

All in all, it’s always a trade-off. If I spend time submitting, commenting, or posting on another’s website, sure there’s a chance it might drive traffic to me. But, if I spend the same time adding or improving existing content on my website, I’m almost always assured of greater benefit that working on someone else’s.

At least that’s my perspective. Tell me if you agree, or not.

3 Thoughts on “Social Bookmark Links Are Overrated

  1. True, submitting poor quality content to social bookmarking sites can be a waste of time.

But I think a lot of webmaster don’t submit to social bookmarking sites just to get backlinks. They do it to get traffic – And social bookmarking sites can deliver a lot of traffic, quickly if the content submitted is good. Post the same content on your website and it’ll take time before google crawls it, then more time before it starts dragging people to your site.

  2. Very true. If you’re going to submit yourself, you better compost the type of article that can actually make it to the top.

A high quality submission that goes to the top will only help.

  3. Why not try submitting your articles to various article directories? Surely it would drive traffic, especially if the articles are well-written. As most article directories have, the resource box is the proper place where you could place a direct link to your own site. And if people would find your articles to be very helpful, they can click on your links in the resource box and that would give your site sure traffic.
