What To Do During A Google Update

The current Google update appears to continue on in full swing. I am seeing terms moving around like Mexican jumping beans on meth. Now is not the time to analyze what’s happening, or to make wholesale changes about what you think Google might like. Actually, it’s never a good time to try and appease Google, because what they like today they’ll probably frown on tomorrow.

Google is a mercurial entity, running hot or cold depending on unknown and variable conditions.

What they liked yesterday, they might hate today. Remember content scrapers? They were all the fashion when Google was just starting out. Now they’re treated like pariahs. The same can be said for a number of former techniques (I won’t even mention Adwords Arbitrage) that were once the cutting edge but have now been relegated to the dustbins of history.

At this stage of the game, I think it’s really important to ignore the vagaries of the Google algo and focus on core practices that build strength in any website, rather than focus on short term tricks that give you short trick gains (unless that’s your whole business model).

Google will continue on with their update, merrily causing mayhem, injury, and destruction along the way. Nothing can stop the Big G. They’re the proverbial Bull in a China shop. As website operators all we can do is make sure the China is removed from the top shelf so it doesn’t get damaged permanently.

When Google stops updating, we can then take a good look at what really changed and make our plans accordingly.

How are your site faring during this recent update?
