I have always been one of the people who thinks “if you want a job done right, you do it yourself.” And, up to a point, this is true. But as I continue on doing internet marketing, and I build and manage more websites, the responsibility becomes greater. I realized a few months back that if I were to be more successful, I’d need to delegate responsibilities to others.

The others I’m delegating to are mainly organizations that have a core competency that’s different than mine. This seems like a common sense directive, but it’s important to remind ourselves that we can’t do everything. The key for me is to seek out service providers who can do the work at an acceptable level and for an acceptable rate. Of course, you’ll kiss a lot of frogs in order find a Princess when it comes to some of the people offering services online, but once you get a good short list of people to do work, it increases your income by leveraging your profits.

The leverage can help you do what you need to do because you know someone else is out there helping with the heavy lifting. If you’re feeling tired, at least some of your contractors are still getting results for you.

I don’t have all the results yet, but I’m seeing more positive signs that my plan is working out. Over the next few months I’ll attempt to tweak the plan until it reaches a state of perfection.

Are you good at delegating assignments, or do you like to do all the work yourself?

  1. I do almost everything myself, but I don’t do the stuff I am not really good at.

For instance, I never do website design. When I am launching a new blog, I always use professional designers.

I might hire a copywriter sometime soon, but so far I haven’t had the need to use a virtual assistant.

But, I agree with you. If you want to get things done, you need to delegate some of your work.

  2. You still have to do a lot yourself and look for good people but every little bit of work helps.

BTW, Jens, I checked out your blog. Very, very nice. Any tips on getting more RSS Subscribers? Looks like you’ve been outdoing me on that front.

  4. I believe in every word of this post. More often than not, you are the man for the job, but in order to continue servicing additional clients at the quality level you were servicing far less, delegation becomes an excellent art form.

In my own experience, our firm grew internally to handle the additional work flow to avoid having to outsource, but I respect that you are doing so. I think that outsourcing can be an excellent way to enable your firm to acquire new clients without staff expansion.

But it’s the kissing many frogs part that worries me…

I wish you all the best.
