Many days on the web look just like the day before. But every now and again, something exciting will happen. If you get a short term burst in traffic, you probably need to capitalize on it, because it’s bound to disappear as soon as it arrives. If you can conserve some of the visitors, it will help you build your overall visitor base.
Get’em while it’s hot
If you see a large amount of people coming to your website on a certain query or from a certain source, try and custom tailor something to keep the around your website for a minute. It could be as simple as “related articles you may enjoy”, or placing a YouTube video in your post. It doesn’t have to be intricate, just effective.
Equally important is to keep the traffic coming. If the visitors are arriving from a search term, it’s easy enough to add ancillary terms that will also bring traffic. Just pay sharp attention to how the people arrive, and what they do on your website while they’re at it.
With a sudden quick burst of traffic, it’s not as important to monetize the traffic as it is to get them to visit your site, and hopefully turn them into repeat readers. Prompt them to sign up for your RSS, welcome them specifically, ask for an email for a newsletter. It doesn’t matter what you ask them, but at least reach out and say “Hi, you are new to my site and I’d like you to come back.”
Once you’ve had a few bursts of traffic, the spikes will become addictive. If you manage the burst effectively, you’re bound to add to your overall growth numbers quite nicely.
