One thing I love about building a website is taking such a small initial investment and building a property that can earn potentially unlimited amounts of money. There are few other industries around that afford such opportunities. In fact, I can’t think of any. I consider the Internet to be the “Frontier of Our Times”, and much like the initial pioneers who went to Deadwood looking to become rich from gold, online pioneers always have hopes of “striking it rich.”

You make money by adding value to your website continously

If you don’t get rich, so what? You can still earn a great living online. Millions of people do it, and they do it by building websites up from an idea into a business reality. And when you get sick of building a website, or can’t expand on your own, or become interested in other projects, then you can sell you web property the way you would any other asset.

Add that point, the work you’ve done will add up. You’ll get extra money for:

  • Your organic rankings
  • Your website reputation
  • Your regular visitors
  • Your RSS subscribers
  • Your content

None of these things existed before you built your website, and all of them are the result of your excellent efforts. When you finally decide to sell your web business, you’ll get a return on all the effort you put in from the first day, and that’s where the real money can be made on a website.

If you’re feeling a bit lazy about making improvements, try to remember who benefits the most from it. That’s right, it’s you. Whether you get paid more now, or in the long run, whatever improvements you make will yield significant results.
