A Lot Of Stale SEO Information Keeps Floating Around

I have been reading about SEO for many years now, and I have to say the conversation has finally become mind-numbing. I understand why. It’s very difficult for people to actually talk about SEO in terms of “what works” when they make their living from websites with tons of competitors. If you actually knew the “Secret to SEO”, and you then published it to a forum or blog full of strange readers, your secret would diminish in value overnight.

Not all of the information is wrong. In fact, some of it is pretty good, but doesn’t go very far towards an in-depth conversation. There are only so many ways to talk about “getting links” before the subject is just dead boring to anyone.

The common sense advice also becomes so “common” so quickly, that it isn’t news for long. How many people don’t know about RSS by now? But it’s not all bad news. All it means is that it’s time to discuss the subject in a little more depth.

If someone says you should “get links” to improve your website rankings, that’s fine. But some specifics might really be helpful. Like “what links” and “where”?

All in all, whether the topic is narrow or not, there certainly have to be new ways of looking at things. I’ll be doing my best in 2008 to try and at least find a new spin on old subjects, rather than repeating what’s already been said.
