I’ve been producing commercial-oriented content on the internet since 2003. Before that, I was also involved with the internet business in a professional capacity, and never got into doing much internet work “just for fun.” My content has always been commercial in nature, so I’ve been aware of the fact that the way I promote my websites is different that people with strictly hobby websites.

It is much tougher to get people to link to commercial content

The fact that your page is plastered with ads means it’s less likely to get “natural links”. It’s no big deal, and you can still get plenty of them, but you have to recognize your basic handicap. If you have ads on your page, which you must have to monetize traffic, many people will look down at the content.

I think we’re just dealing with basic human nature here. Webmasters who look for sources to link to might be a bit reluctant to link to a website that is probably commercial competition for them, or simply makes money. They know they’re sending a hard earned web visitor away, so they might be wary about who they send the visitor to.

The main way you’ll overcome the objections is by providing completely relevant content.

Your job might be a bit tougher, but you’ll still attract links

Make sure:

  • You are on topic
  • Your subject is written well
  • Your site design is pleasing enough
  • Your website appears credible

All of these criteria can be met whether you own a commercial website or not. In the end, people will link to commercial content, you might just have to work a bit harder for it.
