If you don’t know the story of John D. Rockefeller, it’s one worth investigating. He was able to make more money than anyone else in the oil business, and one of the key ways he did so was by exploiting every by-product of the oil refining process. In the end, it was just such a by-product that made him rich, when automobiles came into fashion and all of them needed gasoline.

We can learn a great lesson from John D. Rockefeller.

“Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.”

Your website has a number of by-products that exist because of your activities. Traffic is the most obvious one and not all traffic is created equal. What we think of as “traffic” is people and they act in somewhat predictable ways.

If we can find the absolute right mix (or one close to it), then we can expect to maximize our profits. It’s not always easy to balance the needs of advertising with the needs of the visitors, but you might be surprised at how much advertising most web surfers will put up with. The more times we monetize the same people, the higher our revenues.

So just when you think your website can’t give off anymore money, you prove yourself wrong by finding yet another way to monetize it. Or you find a way to drive more traffic there, which always gives you a revenue increase. Either way, you can earn more by selling your traffic by-products to those who need them most.

A careful study of the type of people who visit your website should give you an idea of the best way to monetize.

I’ll look at a few methods you can use in upcoming posts.
