Policing Your Website

I find a thankless but vital job of being a webmaster is policing your website. This is especially true of any website that allows comments from the public. If you do allow comments, then you can expect your fair share of attempted spam, so you have to be diligent when it comes down to checking the comments for accuracy. But the policing won’t stop there.

You’ll also have to make sure your website is being attacked at a server level by hackers and other malcontents. There are enough of them out there to gag a maggot. If you have ever admin’ed a computer or router on the internet, you’d be amazed at how many hacking attempts there are. Bots are operating relentlessly, hoping you make even one small mistake.

One other aspect of policing your website is just making sure every thing functions at peak performance. Give your website an inspection, and look for any possible screw-ups that might cause you later. This will include your SEO work. Make sure your rewrite rules are legible to machines and ensure you don’t have any mistakes in your robots.txt.

If you’re like me, you’ll end up patrolling your websites constantly!
