If you like driving traffic to your website through content development, there are few techniques you’ve probably become familiar with. Content can be developed with a few distinct purposes in mind. Two of my favorites are keyword selection and news driven. I’ll outline the differences in both, starting with keyword selection.

Keyword Selection

Keyword selection is a no-brainer for someone developing traffic. In order to get people to your website, it makes sense to find keywords that they’re already looking for. Once you find keywords that seem to have a sufficient level of traffic, then you develop content based around those main concepts. This way, you should be relatively sure that there is at least some interest in the pages you’re making. Of course the keyword tools that you’ll use are notoriously inaccurate, but at least you’ll have some idea that people are actually searching for the words pages you’re building.

News Driven Traffic

News driven traffic is basic. You write articles based on news that is happening in your industry. These articles are not based on keyword research, but still have a logical basis for existence. You can pretty much be assured that if the news is happening, then people must be interested in what’s going on. You won’t find these keywords in any keyword tool because you’re ahead of the curve, not looking up data that is 90 days old or even older. The advantage to this method of content development is that the content you make should easily rank ahead of other pages that come later, because you’re the first responder.

Use a combination of both methods of Content Development for best results

I think the best method, especially for blogs or websites that update constantly is a combination of both. You should add keyword selected content as well as news driven content to your website in whatever proportion you deem appropriate. This should be a strategy that is pleasing to both search engines and visitors alike. If you load up too much on keyword selected content, the website might appear to be too “spammy” to visitors. If you overdo the news driven content, you may end up with content that “pops” at the beginning, but dies as the traffic dies off. In order to keep your traffic levels moving up, a combination ensures that people are searching for your content now, and in the future.

If you follow these two simple strategies, plus a few others we’ll look at in future posts, you can ensure a steady stream of fresh and profitable visitors now and in the future.
