For the last year or so, finding a page with the “Supplemental Results” label has been enough to un-nerve almost any webmaster. “Why do they hate my page?”, the intrepid webmeister would wonder. “Haven’t I done everything humanly possible to win the love of Google corp and especially Googlebot? Am I not worthy of a place in the main index?” In a bid to allay such fears, Google today announced that this particular scarlet letter of low quality will no longer be labeled as such.

The changes we make must focus on improving the search experience for our users. Since 2006, we’ve completely overhauled the system that crawls and indexes supplemental results. The current system provides deeper and more continuous indexing. Additionally, we are indexing URLs with more parameters and are continuing to place fewer restrictions on the sites we crawl. As a result, Supplemental Results are fresher and more comprehensive than ever. We’re also working towards showing more Supplemental Results by ensuring that every query is able to search the supplemental index, and expect to roll this out over the course of the summer.

So, basically, your page might still be in the Supplemental Results, but it no longer will be labeled as such. Hardly an innovation of the first order, I must interject.

What do you think of this “news”? Is it as yawn-worthy as it seems to be?

  2. Well at least the almighty gods at google are doing something. It always unnerves me when the big brother sits up there and watches from afar making decisions that effect my income.
The supplemental index is something that I have gotten used to and don’t really fret over at all any more.
Let the gods throw their lightning bolts at me, as long as I can see them coming I can step aside and avoid the damage….it’s the silent ones that keep me awake at night…..the ones that might be winging their way even now! :)
