If you’ve made your living from online for a number of years, chances are you’ve acquired a portfolio of websites. The tendency to start or purchase multiple websites makes a lot of sense, but there are some issues worth mentioning. Let’s take a look at the advantages and the disadvantages of this approach towards diversified web income.

The advantanges of owning a portfolio of websites:

  • You won’t get wiped out by indexing changes like you would if you only had one. If your own website take a dump, your income will suffer almost 100%.
  • You won’t get as bored working on multiple websites. You can avoid burnout by trying your hand at more than one site.
  • You can experiment with different keyword categories to learn which one is the most profitable
  • You can experiment with traffic levels and see which one is easiest for gaining new visitors
  • You shouldn’t be “stuck” for new ideas or adding improvements.

Disadvantages of owning a portfolio of websites:

  • Costs are higher. Hosting, domains, and marketing costs all go up
  • Your focus might be lacking. It’s tough to work on more than one project and give it your best.
  • Complexity of site administration rises
  • You have to stay on top of many patches and upgrades, instead of just one.

The two different strategies involve nearly totally different approaches. I’ve been doing the multiple website thing from the beginning and I sometimes wonder if I would have been better off putting all my eggs in one basket and putting all of my efforts into one big website. But then I merely have to remember the pain of getting no traffic to one website after a “bad update” to realize just how fragile the strategy really can be.

What is your approach? Do you manage one main site of a portfolio?

  2. Yes - I do! I do have a portfolio, but probably manage only one main site in there …

The rest kind of fall into place, or my attention focus gets to it on rotation. I’ve wondered how I would fare if I spent as much time on the pet related sites only as I do on the rest of the sites - or, concentrated on the 1800HART and spent on the promotion of me. While it’s true, there is a multiple effect on the earnings potential with more sites .. the time effect needed to properly maintain is also multiplied (at least it’s with a one-person situation like mine)

  3. You got it. I guess we’ll never know the answers to those questions, either.
