SEO - One-time Job Versus Continous Work

I’m becoming convinced that SEO is more of a one-time job these days. You still hear tons of people saying that “building links” is an on-going job that never ends. And I guess for certain types of websites (namely static websites that are keyword-oriented) it might be. But for websites that update constantly, there’s nowhere nearly as much struggle to get links, and the best part is, these links actually carry traffic with them.

“Personalized Search” from Google cannot be ignored as it relates to modern day SEO. In essence, Personalized Search means that people will be voting on all websites instead of links. In essence, you can see that Google will probably move away from a links-based algo to one that puts much more emphasis on usability.

Links will still count, of course. But it’s doubtful they’ll continue to be the “one key factor” that people wax so eloquent about. In fact, I think that’s already happening quite a bit. Several of my domains that have very few links and low PR are doing quite well in the SERPs. I assume it’s because people must be enjoying the content. If not, it’s some other factor. But one thing is clear, it’s not high PR or tons of link popularity doing it.

Now I think you need to do your SEO up-front, and review it every few months. I don’t think on a decent site that you’ll have to work it all day long. In fact, if you spend all your time on SEO, I almost guarantee you your site is lacking in some other area.

How much SEO are you doing these days? Do you work at it continously.

  2. Wow,
You’ve put my thoughts into writing.
Just a quick comment though, this only relates to good content sites.
smaller or ecommerce sites will still have to rely (for the near future) on link building which is an ongoing work

  3. If you are talking about indexing within the SERP’s for non competitive keywords, then I agree once off work and quarterly updates are fine. Competing on competitive phrases is continuous work if you want to be on the 1st page!

  4. Darren,

    What do you mean?
But for websites that update constantly, there’s nowhere nearly as much struggle to get links, and the best part is, these links actually carry traffic with them.

Can you give me an example of a website that updates constantly

  5. Bill, blogs update all the time. Any website that offers fresh custom-produced content is what I’m referring to.

Andrew, if you design a clever “link-baiting” campaign, you can get links constantly without having to “work” at it much.

Now, bad websites, that fundamentally lack anything special will definitely struggle the whole time they’re online. Those websites will always need SEO and SEOs to acquire links for them.
