Have you ever heard that phrase? Any port in a storm. Well that’s the case when it comes to internet marketing. If you make your living from websites, a seemingly sunny day can turn hella-cloudy in the time it took me to write this sentence. And when that happens, the main things that can carry the day are your genuinely sunny disposition and your innate flexibility.

Flexible people don’t get bent out of shape
I know, I know, quite a corny phrase. But like most corny phrases, it contains some valuable truth in its’ very kernel. Flexible people must adapt to the times they live in, because they just can’t expect the internet conditions to adapt to them. You can waste a lot of time being a “gloomy Gus”, crying about some perceived injustice foisted on you by a third party, or you can roll up the sleeves and get to work.
What worked yesterday just might not work today. Nowhere is this truer than in the world of SEO, where optimizers try and exploit any loophole they can to enhance their rankings. Those loopholes close faster than a virgin’s legs when she hears her parents get home when the A-team of spam-preventers crack down, as they are wont to do.
So, no matter what you decide to do when it comes to internet marketing, don’t place a false emphasis on stability. You may end up having stable traffic and rankings, but you may not be able to hang up on them consistently, day in and day out. And even if you can, that’s hardly the point of running a website which should be constant growth. If you’re doing a good job of retaining visitors, then your main job is still bringing in new bodies.
When you look around the web today, try and do it with new eyes, no matter how jaundiced you may have become. See the opportunities that are lying in wait for you. Don’t concentrate on the stormy weather that may have you wanting to guide your web vessel back to the safety of shore, but rather push boldly ahead where no man (or at least any marketers in your category) has gone before.
If you can steer your ship while others have lost their moorings, then victory is assured you in the end.
