The More Things Change…

The more they stay the same. And nowhere does that statement appear to be truer than on the internet. I have to say, the perfect consistency of certain past-times never ceases to amaze me. Each day, like clockwork, the automated spammers of the internet continue to pound away at the same web forms and email boxes, and with probably the same results. Every time I receive a new email for the incredible “WonderCum”, I have to admit I’m incredulous that these age old rackets are still working for some.
I know, I know…only dumb people buy from spam. But apparently the dumb people never learn. Either that, or there’s always a fresh bunch of suckers washing ashore each day. In any event, it’s surprising that there’s a great deal of people who buy cell phones from email addresses posted in unrelated forums, but interestingly enough, some companies have adopted this form of marketing as their main push for sales.
Whether any of this really works isn’t for me to say. But I have noticed that most of the fly-by-nighters end up being in business just as long as those who work towards long-term success. At some point, seemingly, it would dawn on them that they could spend the same amount of money getting the same, or similar, results.
The internet has been this way for as long as I can remember. The only question is: will it always be like this? So far, the Wild West sort of environment has seemingly been the way forward, but as the whole industry matures, it seems likely some changes could be made to reduce fraud. For sure, low cost domain registrars would seemingly be guilty for much of the junk that goes out. If domains were at least somewhat expensive, “throwaway domains” would cost too much for the average spammer to burn in a day.
What ideas can you think of that would reduce web or email spam? Do you think it’s here to stay?
