Well the new Google is here and it’s going to change everything. I’m sure you’ve already figured that out by now if you played around with Google Universal Search today. This thing was “2 years in the making” according to company officials, and it ties together all of the disparate search engines that the company has built into one unit.

This is the final step in the Google-ification of the universe. Now Google will be shifting more and more of their traffic over to internal search services like YouTube for video search, Google News for news search, etc, all from one universally accessible interface.

It’s amazing how quiet Google kept this huge upgrade. I’ve been noticing signs of this coming for a few weeks, but the overall scope of the redesign and re-distribution of their traffic is interesting. So far I see only positive results as far as my own sites are considered.

Google’s Vice President of search products Marissa Mayer summed up the Google Universal Search upgrade by saying, “The ultimate goal of universal search is to break down the silos of information that exist on the web and provide the very best answer every time a user enters a query.”

Google stated in an announcement Wednesday that its vision for universal search is to ultimately compare and rank all the information in real time by searching across all of its content sources at once. For webmasters, this could mean more exposure and for Google News publishers, a definite thumbs up in that arena. But it also has SEO managers rolling their eyes and groaning as they attempt to decipher just how best to work with their customers websites to improve their ranking.

I’ve been raving about fast Google has become for a few months now, and now it looks like the future is even brighter for quick indexing. If you haven’t started updating your website regularly with news, you just may miss out on the next Google revolution.

  2. You are correct,
The new interface which exposes more features of the google engine other then web search will force us to incorporate more content (news, images, vids) into our websites.

  3. Is this really much of an upgrade? It sounds more like Google is just refining its search categories and maybe adding a few links to its homepage.

And I do not understand if they really mean it when they say, “Its vision for universal search is to ultimately compare and rank all the information in real time.” Sounds like a near-impossible optimization problem that will quickly eat up resources.

  4. Now its not enough to maintain a website - catalogues have to be produced, labelled, seo’d and uploaded to Froogle as well. Not good news for the smaller businessman who is already struggling with a bit of html to have some sort of a web presence.

On a fun note, I did a product search for “book on healing” and there was no sign of Amazon anywhere. It’s going to make things interesting, that’s for sure …

  5. Perhaps it’s too early to tell. One thing is for sure, Google will want everyone to know how to rank well for their subject matter if it’s relevant simply because of their own relevant goals inclusive of pleasing the basic searcher. No big deal, it will all be clear soon enough.
