People are more than happy to give you free advice about internet marketing, and generally it’s along the lines of something like this: “find a profitable niche, build a website, and stick with it.” But I think the average person would have a tough time identifying a profitable niche, and pulling profit from any niche requires sustained effort. Of course you need to find you niche, but the only way to determine profitability is by testing.
Some niches pay more than others, and some specific approaches to internet marketing are more profitable than others. What’s to say you couldn’t make more from running my website than I do? You may use completely different approaches that I’ve never thought of. This is the reason people are willing to “overpay” for websites. They know that their management skills can increase the profit of the website they take over.
Certain characteristics that all successful profitable niches will have:
- Sustainable traffic
- Active or even high traffic levels
- A great number of competitive advertisers
- Weakling competitors - unlikely to happen but would be great if it did
All of these factors will result in you being able to make good money. All you need is sufficient search traffic and a decent CTR and you’ll make the money. With additional text link sales and in-line advertising, you might be surprised at how profitable a niche can be. But don’t confuse niche with “small”. The larger the niche, the better, in many instances.
