How Much Content Is Too Much?

It’s been getting tougher to get marginal quality content indexed in Google. I can understand why such a shift would occur. Google spends billions on bandwith, and if they can exercise better judgment about which pages need updating, they can save tons of money. So they do a better job of picking and choosing what type of pages they’ll take. This means you have to consider exactly the worth of any content you plan on adding to your website.
The last time I checked, Google’s mission was to “Index the world’s infomation”. They didn’t say, “some of it”. So they really should make an effort to index everything the find. But let’s make a distinctions.
Content that I feel should always be included in Google is anything done by hand. If a human generated it legitimately, there should be no great pain in Google’s machines indexing all of it.
I’ll also add the word unique, too, otherwise someone could “copy by hand” and still be rewarded. So I feel that if 1) a human makes it and 2) it’s unique, it should have a legitimate shot at ranking in Google. I’m not sure if Google agrees with me, though.
I would still advise someone to add content to their website, if it’s pertinent to users and it’s something that contributes to the overall development of the web. Dumping a product catalogue online with 20 variations of each product made into search engine friendly URLs is not what I’d consider legit, although it very well could be in certain cases. Lately I get the impression that Google is treating even unique hand crafter pages as if they’re suspect, and this is not keeping with the spirit of comprehensiveness.
We’ll see if Google loosens the noose on certain requirements they seem to be imposing lately. I’m almost sure they will. If they actually start penalizing legit content, it really can’t be good for anyone.
Do you have a ton of content? How well is it indexed in Google?
