The Concept Of Content Is Expanding Rapidly

A lot of webmasters use the word “content” in a way that large companies don’t. When a webmaster talks about “content”, she’s generally referring to “keyword rich text content”. When large companies speak about the internet and content, they’re referring to a vast array of content, namely graphics, text, and video. They’re even referring to full length movies and the life. When you consider the absolutely endless barrage of content coming online, you have to wonder.

Search engines love text content but users love images and video

More and more people demand images and video in their daily surfing diet. It’s not hard to understand why they’d feel like this. You don’t always have time to digest an in-depth text piece, but you might just stick around for a video recap. This is the nature of modern soundbite society, and it can’t really be any different online. People are used to easy to understand images and videos, so at some level, search engines tend to be out of touch with the users because they place so much emphasis on clean text.

I hear webmasters brag about their content websites, but when I take a look, I’m not really that impressed. If you aren’t careful, you end up building a “collection of articles” which are largely centered around keywords, and this type of website seems to be particularily vulnerable to SERP downgrades.

This is one area where I see the SEO field growing even more important in the next few years: making non text-based content search engine friendly as well as non text-based search engines. More and more of it is coming online every day.
