I always enjoy writing about traffic in this blog, so let’s talk about the best possible traffic of all: word of mouth. Word of mouth marketing has always been the best form of traffic for any business, because of the low cost and high level of effectiveness. Word of mouth, viral, buzz, and blog marketing all are beginning to take their place as extremely powerful tools.
Why word of mouth marketing is so valuable
1) Word of Mouth marketing is loved because it has very high source credibility.
A personal recommendation has a higher level of credibility than almost any other form of marketing, especially when the person is well trusted.
2) Word of mouth marketing campaigns can result in buzz surrounding the product, which will help to market even more units.
If people are genuinely excited about a website, they tend to spread it to others. Compare this to the uphill battle you face when you attempt to promote a website solely by yourself. The extra leverage from the crowd of people will help spread the word much faster.
3) Word of mouth marketing is a “set it and forget it” type of marketing plan.
You can go ahead and work on other projects while other people promote your product/service or website. That’s the whole beauty of the plan. If you build something compelling, the number of referred visitors will be so high, that it will probably tilt any project towards success.
As part of a cohesive strategy, Word of Mouth can’t be ignored
Concentrate on 1) user experience and 2) customer satisfaction to ensure you receive positive word of mouth from customers. Follow up with customers and ask them how you’ve done. Try and resolve any disputes quickly and favorably for customers. All of these principles are so simple, that they’re rarely mentioned as ways to increase profits, but the certainly are the best way for an online business to grow. When you don’t have to pay to advertise, you have a huge competitive advantage over others.
