How Far Can SEO Take You?

People always get excited about the idea of SEO, and many enter the field headfirst. But after you’ve “SEO’d” any websites, you start to realize that SEO is merely part of a broad strategy, and rarely something that you do in a vacuum. I’ve even begun to notice a change in how search engine marketing firms position themselves. Almost all of them now refer to their work as being integrated with other forms of marketing. It’s unavoidable really.
What SEO Can do
1) SEO can make a website search engine friendly. This alone will generally help the site owner generate many more visits daily than if the site wasn’t worked on.
2) SEO can lay a solid foundation of incoming links which will help the site thrive in the long run
3) SEO can help increase visibility in the search engines for the website, introducing many new visitors
What SEO Cannot Do
1) Make a useless website somehow more useful
2) Make a website rank for terms it doesn’t merit for an extended period of time.
3) Make up for a lack of other forms of marketing
You Can’t Live Without SEO
You’d be crazy to try and ignore good SEO principles. But you also might be a bit crazy to bank on SEO completely. There are many other facets to website administration (especially for website administration for profit). Do your SEO up front and continously, but devote most of your time to making your website better and satisfying you customers. That’s the only thing that will really raise your income.
SEO is essential, but there’s no need to place the practice on a pedestal.
