With Google A Big Surge In Traffic Might Spell Doom

I am going to point out a phenomenon that very few people (that I’ve seen have talked about). This is a theme that has recurred for quite some time, so when I saw an account of it by someone else, I decided it must be happening to others. Here’s a post where a webmaster (with an afflicted website) describes what happens.
This month, I experienced a surge in traffic on the 14th, more than double the recent daily average number of visitors. I also noticed a similar rise in traffic from my similar website, though this site is only 6 months old. The traffic didn’t maintain, but the boost in traffic had me searching for answers, thinking maybe Google was making changes.
This same thing has happened to my “afflicted website” on more that one occassion. There is a huge boost in traffic the day before the website is “dumped” by Google. Ha. That has to be someone at Google showing they have a sense of humor, right?
This has happened at least six times now. It’s sort of creepy. You suddenly feel elation, as if all of your hard work has finally paid off: “Google really likes me!”. Then, within 24 hours, you and your website are plummeted to the bowels of depression as you’re buried in position 924.
If nothing else, it makes the job exciting for a change. All of the constant upheavals in Google are likely going to make everyone realize they have to stay on their toes. Google traffic is here today and gone tomorrow, whether you’re careful or not sometimes.

Yea you really got to hate that, especially when it happens to your bread and butter clients. One minute you are in heaven when the client is on page one for all of their keywords, the next for no reason they get dumped and the client and your boss are questioning your methods.
This fluctuation with google would seem to indicate that it is not the stable resource for information that it once was touted to be. As a former teacher, I had encouraged my students to use it for their research. Now, I would be very reluctant.

Surges in traffic are not always google related; I think it’s important to point this out. Sometimes other websites/masters can have a big impact on your traffic.
Make sure you get a statistic tracking program like awstats so you can watch where your traffic comes from.
I notice an occasional big surge in traffic when something like this happens:
I write an interesting niche article and a big site picks it up and posts it in a prominent position for a day. It gets a lot of page views and subsequently a lot of link click thru to my site from people wanting to know more.
You should maintain your thinking about your baseline traffic and think of these surges as a positive because they will slowly bring your baseline traffic up!
