MySpace marketing has been exploited quite a bit in 2006. It’s no surprise because the system really does lend itself towards automation. The idea of searching for friends and then adding them is one that definitely would appeal to anyone who’s doing the task on their own. But no matter what, building a high-traffic profile on MySpace is something that has to be done. Why?

1) It costs you nothing
2) MySpace is either the number 3 or number 5 largest website on the internet, depending on who you believe.
3) The demographic of MySpace might not hear of your website otherwise. You owe it to them and yourself to make sure they learn about your website.

I decided to be clear in my profile that I was promoting a website. Absolutely Fa-bulo.us MySpace Page. I know many people build profiles to try and directly sell products, but this particular page is just a “doorway” from the Web 2.0 internet into a blog. I chose an entertainment topic because it’s very much inline with the people who use MySpace.

After 2 days, I’ve amassed around 114 friends. This has been pretty easy to do with some Google searches.

I looked into some methods of promoting, but they looked dubious at best. One thing I am doing though, is putting a big image file in the comments that I leave on people’s profiles. When they click on the image, it goes right to the website.

Almost all profiles that allow HTML will have these types of pictures. It’s a simple way to build traffic to your website, especially if you can make the graphic memorable or clever.

Building a profile by hand up to 1,000 or so users should be very easy for anyone with a bit of time on their hands. You want to:

1) Add friends
2) Add comments in friend’s profiles which
3) Builds page views to your profile which
4) Increases friend requests you get

Once you have a decent amount of friend’s, you can post a bulletin that goes to all of them, and therein lies the true magic. I haven’t experimented with the bulletins yet, but I plan on making them interesting, otherwise I’m positive they’ll be ignored.

I’ll write some more posts about Marketing through Myspace in the near future which go into a bit more detail about the methods.

  2. Darren,

I have been into myspace for awhile and have over 1000 friends.

How do I find your profile I would like to be your friend?

    Mine is http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=122865454

How do you make a big image file?

IMHO bulletins are a waste of time no one reads them.

I think you would be better off joining groups and list in the forums.
Check out this group I belong to:

Myspace tells you when your friends are having a birthday and if you post in the comments on their birthday you get a lot of comments on you profile that day.

Read this about a scam that is going around on Myspace:
One recent scam works this way. A spammer posts a number of phony profiles featuring pictures of cute women, often promising nude photos. A “friend request” with a womans photo is sent to hundreds of users.

Once the fake profile loads a Blue screen descends saying the profile is protected by the “MySpace Adult Content Viewer”. Unsuspecting users who try to download the viewer instead gets a worm that installs adware on their computers.

If you want a lot of friends try:

I would like to hear how other people are using Myspace to promote their websites.

  5. There’s actually alot of sales going on at Myspace at the moment. It’s a blend of creating content, gathering friends, and getting the “eyeballs” on your page. Many are getting involved with Youtube and Metacafe, which actually pays out.
This whole Web 2.0 thing is a brand new frontier and there are definitely things in the works for those that know how to play. Good info!

I’m going to try that “big image” thing.

If you’re having success pointing to your blog, use it to create sales! ;-)

Looking forward to more articles on this MySpace Marketing, Darren!

  6. Darren, do you use a friend adder bot? Adding friends on Myspace is one of the most annoying and time consuming things to do.

  7. I invested $17 in the “Adder Robot”. It doesn’t do much except add friends. But doing it by hand would be insane :)

  8. I’d love to see more detail about this MySpace stuff. It’s overwhelming to me.

I’ve been trying to connect with a babyboomer audience for http://aginggrandparents.suite101.com and a woman audience for http://www.womendaybyday.com. But there are SO many groups and SO many pages, I get lost and time goes too fast. Any suggesitons for really focusing?
