Google Updates Around Holidays Again

Google loves to do their updates around the holidays. The current one has been going on for many days now (I saw big changes starting on the 20th.). This current update also includes the famous “data refresh” that sends one of my websites to the brink of disaster. The thing about these “data refreshes” is that they always send the one website back to some strange historical moment when it doesn’t rank.

I have no idea exactly what causes this, but luckily, the trend towards being out of the SERPs after an update is less and less each time. It appears that we’ll probably expect a backlink update soon. But there’s never any guarantee with Google, as they’ve changed their procedures enough times in recent years to keep everyone guessing.

I’m sure it makes sense to update during the holidays, because traffic tends to be lower than other peak days. It also appears that Google updates, although Google claims they’re continous, tend to occur around the last week of the month. Either way, adding more content is the main way to content with these updates. That, and continuing to do the basic job of SEO and building a website.
