We know that Google is always “getting more sophisticated” in fighting spam, but how well are they really doing. Let’s take a look at what I’d consider to be a “competitive term”: buy viagra. When we look at this term, we’ll see an enterprising SEO who has just man-handled Google and made their claims of being sophisticated seem laughable.
This SEO has owned Google. He/she has 5 out of the top 6 spots!
Wow, this must be a SuperSEO who is using incredibly sophisticated techniques to fool the incredibly sophisticated Google search engine. Hmm, an examination doesn’t indicate that. Each of the top ranking pages is merely a text message posted to a .EDU website and linked to with comment/guestbook spam.
Eureka!
This is old-school stuff and it still rules in Google, because of the “Trustrank” that inflates the value of the .EDU. This is what SEOs have been claiming, and this work seems to indicate that’s it’s still relatively easy to game Google.
