Everyone is looking for the secret to internet marketing. An entire cottage industry of gurus has sprung up, where a mighty “high-earner” will tell you some amazing advice, for a low-low cost. But what types of secrets are there in internet marketing? If you look at the most successful websites on the internet, what can you learn?
Youtube took a unique approach to getting to number one
Can you remember the time you actually heard about YouTube for the first time? I can’t. All I know is that one day “I knew them” and began using the service. I’m sure I wasn’t alone. I imagine most people just “sort of heard” of YouTube also. I don’t recall them doing any heavy duty marketing of any sort, and they were able to sell the company for $1.6 billion.
YouTube’s secret was “finding a need and filling a need”
The need for video sharing seems sort of obvious right now, but it was a glaring weakness which needed to be solved. Flickr did the job for photos, so it was just a matter of time until someone solved the problem of sharing videos, and made it easy enough for everyone to “share” with others. The “sharing” is the entire marketing plan that YouTube used to infect the entire internet. Everytime someone used the service, it helped spread their reach.
Usabilility isn’t much of a secret, and it lacks sizzle
Spreading the message of building a useful website has been popular for awhile, but it will never be as popular as the sizzle you get from selling a “secret technique” to get to the top. But what combination can beat the viral marketing impact of a very usable website that’s “pushed” by friends and family to others? So far, it’s the hottest combination in internet marketing, at least for the big companies, but is widely un-noticed by the average marketers.
You don’t need any secret techniques if your product or website is built on firm ground.
