Everyone tells new people: put up excellent content and the fame and fortune will follow. It is true, to a point. If you don’t have great content, you probably won’t get a ton of attention. It’s also true that most existing popular websites have a ton of great content. But one thing no one is telling you, is what exactly constitutes great content?

The length of the document won’t determine the quality

Some people assume that “bigger is better”, but they don’t have any proof. Some of the most famous documents on the internet aren’t all that long. There’s no reason to assume your content has to be any set length. The main thing is that you cover the subject thoroughly, and more importantly, in a way that people understand.

The grammar and spelling must be good, but won’t set you apart

Your mastery of language won’t assure you of success. Even if you’re a great writer, that doesn’t mean you’re producing great web content. Web content is unlike off-line content. In fact, much of it is written with the idea of short attention spans in mind. Not everyone will read web pages that approximate literature. In fact, most people don’t have the time. They want answers, not high-faluting language.

The quality of your content is determined by the number of websites that link to it

Hey, I didn’t make this rule up, the search engines did. The search engines focus on link popularity. The reasoning is simple. They figure that if people LINK to it, it must be good. So the number one way your content will tend to be judged is by the number of incoming links. This means you need to try and write content that will attract links. What kind of content attracts incoming links? High-quality content of course :)

High quality content is like pornography. You’ll know it when you see it

How will you know you made a high quality content piece? Easy, you’ll feel something click. You’ll have a smile on your face, and the incoming links will pile up. You’ll know it, because it just “feels” right. If most days you don’t feel like you’re producing much of value, then you probably aren’t making a ton of quality content right now.

Give it a try today. Try and make a great piece of content that will garner the love and attention of the masses. It will make your job as an SEO or SEM that much easier.

What signs of quality do you look for in content?
