If you’re like most people, you probably want to get the greatest amount of search engine traffic you can. You want your high quality website to display whenever people type in the right set of keywords. What steps can you take to improve your search engine rankings?

1) Add a blog to your website and update daily

This is the single best thing you can do to improve traffic on your website. It won’t cost you any money, but it will require you to update constantly. The steady stream of updated content that blogs will produce will allow you to rank for many more phrases than you used to, and it will also help you to open a dialogue with your customers.

2) Acquire incoming links - mix up links to your homepage and root directory

Blogs tend to rank very well in search engines. Blogs tend to get a lot of deep-links because of their content. Deep links to your content is an effective way to build interior landing pages up, based on specific keywords. Incoming links to the root directory help the overall PageRank of the website, and help make sure your site is indexed frequently. Frequent indexing, and constant content updates tend to keep you on top in your keyword category.

3) Find a way to continously attract incoming links

The method you use shouldn’t matter, but the fact your remain consistent should. Think of your link-building as a near-continuous job. If you have a viral tool that helps you acquire links, great. If you buy them, then make sure to buy some each month, rather than all at once. A website that gains a lot of links, and then gets no more will tend to erode in the rankings (at least my experience has shown this to happen more than once).

4) Make sure your website is a valuable resource

It’s not easy to put your finger on exactly what makes your website a valuable resource, but you should be able to know it when you see it. You know those websites that you go to, because they have information, or tools, or something that you just love? Well they promote themselves, just by being good. Make your website the one that people seek out in your category, and you’ll always attract natural links and tend to rank highly.
