Current Google Survey: Unsteady Results Being Reported
October 2, 2006 – 9:35 amThe Google site: command has been wonky for months. Today it’s giving off some very interesting values. That’s if you consider seeing the first 3 pages of the true results “interesting”. I think it would be a heck of a lot more interesting to actually see the pages that Google has indexed, rather than all the mis-shapen URIs that make up the “supplemental index”.
What is the site: advanced Google operator supposed to do. Google says:
If you include [site:] in your query, Google will restrict the results to those websites in the given domain. For instance, [help site:www.google.com] will find pages about help within www.google.com. [help site:com] will find pages about help within .com urls. Note there can be no space between the “site:” and the domain.
There’s no indication why this command would come back with such strange results. There’s no indicator it’s “being worked on”, but like other Google advanced operators, it won’t show you an accurate count.
There has been some webmaster communication indicating that Google knows that these commands give off incorrect values, but there hasn’t been an announcement of a scheduled fix, or any updates about it.
The command appears to have really became worse since the recent Google PageRank and backlink update began.
Are you seeing strange results using the site: command?
