Ok, so you decide to become interested in the online marketing game. The first thing you learn about is the importance of tracking your stats. You know that you have to learn about your traffic, in order to attempt to improve your marketing. A lot of these stats packages are live-time, which really gives you the chance to get hooked.

You end up checking the stats often. If fact, if you’re not careful, what used to be a strong interest ends up being an obsession. Soon, long and lonely nights are spent with your nose buried in your monitor, trying to deduce which visitors comes from where. And if you overdo it, you may end up losing sight of what’s most important for your overall online marketing: building a usable website and handling your customer relations.

Stats only tell half the story, and the rest comes from knowledge of people. Knowing people will end up being worth even more to you in the long run. I still recommend that you look at your stats and analyse your traffic every day, but don’t let this interest get in the way of actually performing the work necessary to be successful.

I’ve been trying to curtail my stats obsession for awhile, and I have it basically under control. I’m only tempted to check a few times daily, and I won’t interrupt anything important to check.

How often do you check your stats?

  2. I’m a stat junkie, I admit it :(

I check my stats about 3 times a day, or 10 depending on how many times I need a fix :P

  3. I definitely agree with you that stats aren’t everything, although I still can’t help but check them every now and again.
