Google loses search engine market share in July

Okay, it’s not a huge loss. But Google is down 1% according to the most recent comScore numbers. And apparently Yahoo was the benefactor for the Google loss. We’re not dealing with big numbers, but they’re definitely significant:
According to comScore, 43.7% of all search queries conducted in the U.S. in July used a Google search engine, down from the 44.7% attributed to Google the month before. Meanwhile, Google’s loss was its competitors’ gain. ComScore reports No. 2 Internet search engine Yahoo Search, from Yahoo Inc., (YHOO) saw its share of U.S. Internet search queries increase to 28.8% in July from 28.5% the month before.
The numbers agree with all my own stats. Yahoo is gaining a bit, and MSN never really got into the game. This makes Google particularily vulnerable to competition from Yahoo. They re-designed their main portal look in the last few months, and have appeared to steer more traffic internally.
What does this tell the internet marketers? It tells us that concentrating on Google is important, but it’s not the only thing. Like anyone else, they need to impress their customers in order to maintain them.
Losing market share is significant for Google because they really have only one place to go and that’s down. When you already dominate the market, all you stand to do is lose. We’ll see if the trend continues. If it does, it might be very significant.

Saman,
I agree with you. I think more competition can only be good for all of us. Yahoo is benefitting from Google’s fall.
