Say what you want about Google’s search engine, but if you run afoul of their algo, you’ll pay the price for quite some time. The latest example I have is the 6/27/2006 Google Massacre. No matter what you do, once you have “affected” pages, they can’t be rescued from the scrap heap.
My experience with this type of glitch indicates that the problem will get “fixed” at some point. When that point is, will be anyone’s guess. Basic issues with the same site have occurred multiple times since 9/22/2005, and each period was lengthy.
If this happens to a 10 year old domain, I can imagine how it’s affecting tons of websites these days. The worse part to me is the fact that when this website drops out of the index, my Google Adsense account also receives a 40% reduction in CPM. To me this is unfair, a one two punch with no chance of fast resolution.
I think Google has some idea of the human suffering they cause when they screw up, but I doubt it keeps any of them awake at night. They don’t feel responsible for affecting your business, and in reality, they shouldn’t. But deep down, all of us would love to believe that a multi-billion dollar enterprise like Google would at least make an effort to get it right.
Time will tell.
