Internet marketing can be extremely helpful to any website, and to any webmaster. But it can also be a frustrating practice, that requires a ton of patience. For that reason, you have to adopt a certain mindset when you approach the subject. If you’re easily excitable, or give up easy, internet marketing is not for you. You have to be somewhat cold and calculating, becase search engines are third parties with agendas of their own. They aren’t here to serve your results exclusively, and in fact, they want as many website to rank as possible.

Even if you do well for awhile, never delude yourself that you’re in some sort of partnership with a search engine. They don’t care about at all, and they never will. Your web page is one of billions in their index and they won’t spend time discussing issues with you. If your site drops in rankings, you might never find out why it happened, or how, or even if you can fix it. This means you need to be the type of person who can easily shrug off months or even years of your work going down the drain economically.

Devastation can come to anyone’s internet presence, at any time. You have lower costs on the internet, but one of the disadvantages is the transient nature of cyberspace. You have to be flexible, like a river that bends when it must. You can’t be rigid in your thoughts. There’s no place for dogmatism in the search engine wars.

Most of all you’ll need to work hard and add value. You can’t expect to totally copy others and succeed. If your website is unoriginal in every sense, you’re doomed to a minor existence. Sure, some technical tricks might fool the search engines for awhile, but in the end you’ll be exposed. Many days, most webmasters would be better served improving the overall quality of their websites, rather than doing marketing. Usability is sometimes the best marketing plan on any website.

So if you can stay calm and collected and remain focused on complicated projects over long periods of time, then search engine marketing just be for you. What about all those excitable types who are SEOs? They’re out there too, but they’re getting ulcers over each and every twist along the highway. You might end up burning out if you confuse losing an occasional battle with winning the ultimate war.

  2. The mindset for internet marketing is always changing and will continue to do so. Many of those trying to pursue fortunes online are constantly chasing after the next big thing, but are failing to build the core of their businesses.

    Some say that traffic is all you need…That is only part of the equation. You can have all the traffic in the world coming to your web site, but if your web site never converts any of that traffic, then you are wasting both your time and your money.

    Others say that you just need good content and you will succeed…You can have the best content in the world, but if no one can find it and it does not compell them to take some form of action, then your expenses will continue to be more than your income.

    In order to succeed, you need to formulate a strategy that incorporates strong and compelling content, high visability on the internet, and a long term strategic plan of attack for success.

    Thanks for the comment. I couldn’t agree more with what you said. The strategic planning has never been as important as it is right now.

    Traffic is so commercialized right now, you need a plan to convert people when they get to your site, or you’re wasting your time.

  4. I think that the most critical step for internet markers is to keep up to date with the latest trends and to always test their ideas. There is no way to see improvements if you don’t test your techniques.
