My experiment with Google Adsense and YPN

I’ve been in both the Google Adsense and YPN programs since they began. The fact these program provide income and detailed stats has made it so I’ve become addicted to looking at my stats. Despite the fact I know better, I spend way too much time analyzing essentially meaningless stats, because both of these programs have a way of fluctuating. Most days, your “earnings” which are paid only once a month just don’t matter that much. In fact, I find if I’m having a “bad day” statswise, I get in a bad mood. This is nuts and has to be stopped.

This month I decided to just forget staring at the stats and wait until the end of the month to see what the check is. It’s not like you can do a ton to change your stats most months (outside of making your ads more noticable, etc, which has been done for quite sometime). I figure if I ignore the daily fluctuations I’ll get more into the moment and stop whining about a third party that I can’t really control. My main goal is to build traffic from as many non-search engine methods as I can, so that my over-reliance on free search engine traffic is cut down even more. I’ve managed to lower the amount of money pretty significantly that comes just from Google and Yahoo as a percentage, so this trend will continue, especially as I become more adept at getting and keeping non-search engine visitors. As to the context sensitive ads, I have:

  • Optimized the ads according to the heat zone maps
  • Optimized all the web pages for search engine superiority
  • Built massive amounts of incoming links from diverse methods and means

Now I’ll just set it and forget it. Content has to do what it has to do, and the only way to continue to excel in the content game is to make more of it. Content creation and link building are a continous process that must be continued. Looking at my daily context sensitive ads is unproductive.

What unproductive behavior do you find yourself doing each day?
