Making a website search engine friendly can be tough work, unless you use a template. A template can help you keep your search engine friendly design in tact, even if your website is worked on by a group of people. If you don’t currently use some sort of template, make sure you do.

1) A correctly designed template will insert different keywords, titles, and possible meta descriptions, based on the content of the page. This alone is a huge boost to everyone’s search engine efforts. Without a template, it would remain up to the authors to make sure these important attributes were included, and they often wouldn’t be.

2) With a template, no one is overwriting anyone else’s files. It’s a nightmare when more than one person is managing a website. The use of Front Page and FTP can leave a site with many overwritten files and even badly broken pages and designs. A template means people can edit data and not effect the actual html which is rendered.

3) Templates allow you to make an excellent site structure. With a template, it’s easy to make sure your internal linking is done powerfully. You can auto-generate your own sitemap, and you’ll never miss adding a page, because it’s done automatically for you. You won’t have any orphan pages, which will give your website a boost.

4) No more broken links. With a template, you can make sure that your links are always pointing at the right place. The downside is, of course, that if you break a link on one page, you might just break it all on of them, which could be a disaster. Use Xenu’s Link Sleuth to make sure this doesn’t happen to you.

If you aren’t using a template for your website today, you might want to reconsider. There are a great number of template systems out there you can use. The most common are the Content Management Systems that offer a ton of pre-packaged support for you. Blogs are also excellent sources of templatization. Give it a try, because you might be very surprised how much easier search engine rankings come to you with a well-designed and search engine friendy CMS.
