A common bit of advice you’ll hear often is to submit to the Yahoo Web Directory, because “it’s a high quality web directory which can help your search engine rankings”. Sadly, this statement is false in both parts. Here are some significant reasons the Yahoo Directory is not worth the high cost of submission:

  • The recurring $299 - it’s just too expensive - you can get 15 links reviewed at a directory like Sootle for the same price - and they’re not redirected
  • Yahoo redirects the links, so it dampens the value to you from a search engine ranking perspective
  • The listing provides essentially NO TRAFFIC - for $25 per month of cost (the annual split into 12

The rumors concerning how much Yahoo could help you came from a woebegone era when Google still provided the backhaul for search results for Yahoo.

Yahoo Directory

Fact is, there just isn’t enough traffic coming to you from this purchase. The Yahoo Directory was the big thing on the internet in 1996, but now, 10 years later, it’s rarely if ever used. That means you’re showcasing your website in a directory that wont send visitors or search engine traffic and is the most expensive one out there. If you’re looking to Submit your website to a directory, might I suggest the Sootle Directory? We appreciate your consideration and wish you all the best.
