I’ve been hearing about the same basic strategy for several years now when it comes to internet marketing. I’m pretty sure the info is outdated. Every day I hear people in the SEM industry refer to concepts that either outdated or utterly ridiculous. Many tactics that used to work, don’t anymore. Marketers have to adapt online, just like they do offline.

The nature of business has never been more global. There’s no time anymore to think of customers as people who live in a roughly related geographical area. Your customers can come from anywhere in the world. With increased opportunity comes increased competition. These same customers can buy from anyone also, not just you. This means a modern company has to act fast to capture market share.

A well defined niche and a global marketing plan are two steps needed by the average current consumer, and so is a well rounded Search Engine Marketing campaign. It’s not enough to rely on keyword driven SEO anymore. In fact, you need to use the power of Press Releases, Public Relations, Video, Podcasting, and even the kitchen sink if it can help you.

The division between these various forms of advertising are blending. More and more “new media” companies are actually a combination of old media properties and online marketing. No big marketer will ever leave a method untouched, and as a small and focused marketer, you can’t either.

What can you do to make sure you’re using a fresh approach? Once a week try a technique you’ve never used to promote your website before. Think outside of the box and carefully detail all of your actions. Do not use your old reliable tricks, at least not for a few months. Concentrate on innovation and forget all the hearsay you’ve absorbed in the last few years and stick to plain facts. If you uncover even two new methods of marketing online, you will be that much better at it. No matter how well you’re doing, you can always benefit from experimentation.
