If you haven’t began using an RSS Feed on your website, there’s another great reason: RSS Feeds are downloaded by many websites to use as content, and they can provide backlinks back to the original article. RSS is still relatively new, but more and more websites are using it every day.
If you don’t update your website a lot, then RSS Feeds probably won’t be the answer. But for any blog or content website that is updated frequently the Feeds can be a source of new traffic. The nice thing about the RSS Aggegator services is that they allow you to ‘Ping’ them after each new post. Once pinged, the website will display your newly added posts to interested readers. This can result in you bringing in new traffic after each and every post.
If you offer a partial or full feed, many website will insert the content into their pages. Make sure you form the link back in a way you want, so you get maximum benefit. A service like FeedBurner have a number of features which allow you to personalize and customize feed features. It might be a good idea to create a Creative Commons Copyright license in order to protect the distribution of your content through RSS. Of course, some of your content will be “scraped” by oafs, but the good outweighs the bad.
Be as clear as you can possibly be about your content and how you license it for re-use. If you use a very wide distribution system, you’ll end up having a bigger base of readers and backlinks. And don’t forget, social bookmarking websites often have publicly accessible tags, so the more often your pages are tagged, the better. If you currently have very few backlinks from RSS feeds or social bookmarking websites, you’re missing out on some of the most potent SEO linkage going these days. I’ll take a look at more of these websites in the future.
