Before anyone embarks on a campaign of SEO, they should take a good look at developing their keywords. The wrong keywords will not make you money, and will end up costing you a lot of time. Almost any keyword area these days that has money in it, is competive, so a cohesive strategy is needed to garner your share of targeted traffic.

The best way to check out keywords is to use PPC and see how your conversions are

It’s true that organic search tends to convert a bit better than PPC, but the PPC is a much faster way to build your list of conversion keywords. If you spend your time SEO’ing for the keywords first, without testing them, you’re going about the practice all wrong.  If you start with the list of your actual best keywords, you can focus on the most effective tactics, and save yourself a heck of a lot of time.

If you sell “mid-size blue widgets”, then just about the best search phrase you could hope to see is someone typing “buy mid-size blue widgets”, or, even better yet, you see your own brandname.  Customers who are looking for you by name or looking to “buy” the product are worth 100 information surfers who can’t make anyone money.

Start off with $50, if you have to, in Google Adwords, and do a run.  See if your product matches the traffic.  This might save you months of optimizing ineffectively.
