I can say I haven’t been too impressed by the “Advertise on this site” program from our friends at Google. It’s almost starting to seem like these guys are trying to hard to be cool now. With their stock at an astounding $400+ per share, I guess they need to keep coming up with ideas these days at the GooglePlex. This latest one is not stellar, and more importantly, it shows a continued heavy-handed approach to dealing with publishers that is hard to take.

Imagine the publishers surprise when they saw this thing.

As usual, the first most publishers heard about the program, was when they were surfing around on their websites and happened to notice the strange new message. Imagine how suprised many were when they clicked on the ad to find out their company information (given to Google for payment information) was no public info.

Do we need Google to sell ads on our own websites?

I have an idea: you have a guy whose interested in advertising on your website, go ahead and sell him the ad yourself? Has Google created a universe of webmasters who are now so reliant on them that they can’t even consider selling their own advertising directly? It would appear so, if people are rushing to sign up for this one.

Time will tell, as usual, but first impressions have left me very flat on Google’s latest “breakthrough” product. Doesn’t AdBrite already offer a similar plan that is more lucrative than this one? Oh well, maybe the idea factory at Google is drying up.
