Well, not really explained. But Google has blogged recently about smart pricing. In typical Google fashion, they don’t go into a lot of detail on just how the system works, but they do outline what isn’t important. CTR doesn’t matter, but somehow, as always: Content is King:
4. Remember the old chestnut: “Content is King”
The best way to ensure you benefit from AdSense is to create compelling content for interested users. This also means driving targeted traffic to your site — advertisers don’t gain as much ROI when paying for generic clicks as they do for quality clicks that come from interest in your content. Good content usually equals a good experience for user plus advertiser, which can be much more valuable than CTR.
You get to read it right from the horse’s mouth. Smart pricing pays better on content pages. I guess I’ve always known that anyway. A motivated buyer who reads a 300 world article before clicking on ad is “warmed up” sufficiently to buy. This scant blog post is somewhat of confirmation of this.
