These days, it’s getting painfully obvious that are many people launching new web directories, and very few of them are unique enough to even survive. Apparently a get rick quick mentality exists with the webmaster crowd.

If you put up a directory using an off the shelf script, and put no thought into what will differentiate your directory, you need to expect mediocre results. Plowing through a list of directories as a submitter, one can nearly become hypnotized by the pure repetitive boredom of the sites.

Differentiate or die is a common phrase in the marketing business and is surely applies to the marketing of web directories. If you do not offer unique content, you may even be doomed from a search engine standpoint. If your website is completely devoid of content, you are likely heading for the axe.

Here at Sootle we’ve began adding unique content to all of our directory pages. Obviously, a list of links can be a useful thing to certain web surfers, but how about actual quality pages rather than just a collection of outbound links? It helps your navigation structure, and aids in developing a human-friendly website that may have a chance of standing the test of time.
